NEET (UG) stands for National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (Undergraduate). It is a national level entrance exam conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) for admission to undergraduate medical and dental courses (MBBS/BDS) in various government and private medical colleges across India. NEET (UG) is the only entrance exam for admission to MBBS/BDS courses in India.
NEET (UG) is usually conducted once a year in offline mode (pen and paper-based) across various cities in India. The exam consists of 180 multiple-choice questions, with 45 questions from each of the subjects – Physics, Chemistry, Botany, and Zoology. The duration of the exam is three hours.
To be eligible for NEET (UG), a candidate must have completed 17 years of age as of December 31 of the year of admission and must have passed 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Biotechnology, and English as compulsory subjects. The minimum aggregate marks required in the qualifying examination is 50% for General category candidates, 45% for PwD candidates, and 40% for SC/ST/OBC candidates.
NEET (UG) scores are used by various state and private medical colleges for admission to their MBBS/BDS courses. The counseling for admission to MBBS/BDS courses is conducted by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) on behalf of the Medical Counseling Committee (MCC).
